Elaine M. (Campbell) Stouder, 77, of Indianapolis, passed away in her sleep in the early morning hours of December 25th in Noblesville, Indiana. She is survived by her daughters Laurie (Tim) Callahan, Janice (Tim) Childress, and her five grandchildren James Callahan, Stephen Childress, John Callahan, Sarah Childress, and Hannah Childress. She is also survived by her two brothers, Bill Campbell and Steven Campbell.
Elaine was born to Clarence E. Campbell and Dorothy L. Campbell on May 23, 1944. Elaine spent her childhood in Lafayette Indiana where she became involved in a life-long love of Girl Scouts. After graduating from Jefferson High School in 1962, she always found a way to be involved in Girl Scouts - whether she was a volunteer or an employee.
Elaine was also a loyal member of One Vision in Christ Community Baptist Church. She was a founding charter member of OVIC and the first Trustee to sign documents to purchase the church’s house of worship. She was a leader in the effort to secure OVIC building refinancing, remodeling, and financial streamlining to secure the church’s permanent position with the community. Elaine attended church every Sunday – always sitting in the front pew so she could provide the preacher with a towel and some water. She made crafts, made children’s Christmas costumes, and served the Lord’s Supper for over a decade.
Elaine also loved to crochet. Everyone she knew had at least one hand-crocheted baby blanket, afghan, winter hat or sweater. Two years ago, she crocheted enough hats and matching scarves to provide warmth to all the residents at her assisted living facility.
The pandemic was very difficult for Elaine. She could no longer visit with her friends at Girl Scouts, and her ability to attend church became very limited. Fortunately, she could still crochet. As her ability to walk diminished and her dementia advanced, even crocheting became difficult. She crocheted her last scarf and hat set for a good friend last October.
Services for Elaine will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at One Vision in Christ Church, 6580 E 46th Street, Indianapolis from 10 am to 11am with services beginning at 11am. Burial in Lafayette, Indiana.
