Dr. Charles V. Jones, 85, passed away on March 3rd. Born on May 3rd, 1939 in Beardstown, IL, he dedicated his life to the field of mathematics and education.
Dr. Jones earned his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1979. He went on to teach generations of students at Ball State University, where he served as a Professor of Mathematics from 1984 to 2007. In 1992, he accepted the Lawhead award for excellence in teaching. In 1998, he helped organize faculty to advise furloughed workers wishing to return to education, including working with the Dislocated Workers Task Force organized at Borg-Warner. Also during his tenure at Ball State, he served as the Executive Director of the Office of Teaching and Learning Advancement, beginning in 1997. After his retirement in 2007, he held the title of Professor Emeritus.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr. Jones served as a Worshipful Master F. & A. M. in Rushville, IL, and a member of the Grand Lodge of Illinois. He enjoyed camping and the outdoors, and shared his time as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 22 in Muncie, IN. He was a devoted scholar of the history of science and mathematics, and an avid book collector.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jeanette (nee Parkansky), his sons, Charles and David, his brother, Jeffrey, two grandchildren, Penny and Parker, and several cousins. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Erma (nee McWilliams), his sister, Jaris Farrar, and his brother, Loyd. Dr. Jones will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his students, his commitment to community service, and his impactful leadership in advancing teaching and learning.
A memorial service will be held on March 15th at 3:00 PM, with a visitation from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Harry W. Moore Chapel, Indiana Funeral Care, 8151 Allisonville Rd, Indianapolis.
