David Warner Stocking of Fishers, IN died on September 27, 2020 at the age of 76. Son of Fred Holly Stocking and Sarah Louise Noble of Williamstown, MA, he graduated from Northfield Mount Herman high school and Bowdoin College, Class of 1966. He obtained his Masters in English from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and his Doctorate of Education from Boston University in Massachusetts. In 1965, he married the love of his life Cynthia Whitman Blair, with whom he had two children, Philip Nathan Stocking and Catherine Noble Stocking Whelan.
David enjoyed a long teaching career that lasted for over 40 years. He taught in Parish Hill, CT, North Andover, MA, Newburyport, MA, Harvard, MA, and retired from Wachusett, MA in 2001. Known for his charm and intellectual vitality, he was known best for creating an environment that allowed individuals to develop and grow into upstanding men and women both in the classroom and on the track or cross country trails.
He lived his adult life in many places including Sellersville, PA, Ashford, CT, Andover, MA, Groton, MA, Naples, FL, Boothbay Harbor, ME, Lubec, ME, Noblesville, IN and Fishers, IN. He was particularly fond of midcoast Maine and his time spent there as an undergraduate and on vacation.
During his retirement, he enjoyed writing poetry (a lifelong passion), tutoring ENL, gardening, collecting buffalos, spending time with his grandchildren and dancing to oldies with Cynthia (Snooks). He continued his teaching at the college level as an adjunct professor at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, FL, Edison College in Naples, FL, Butler University in Indianapolis, IN and Ivy Tech College in Anderson, IN.
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Blair Stocking; two children, Philip Nathan Stocking (Kathryn Helen Shea-Stocking) of Burrillville, RI, and Catherine Noble Stocking Whelan (Franklin W. Whelan) of Fishers, IN, his sisters Sally Elizabeth Stocking of Chicopee, MA and Kathryn Holly Stocking-Koza (Frank Stocking-Koza) of Dalton, MA, along with seven grandchildren who affectionately knew him as Pooh-Bah, Jessica Noble Whelan Thorn (D. Stephen Thorn) of Lexington, KY, James Redfield Whelan of Noblesville, IN, John Philip Whelan of Fishers, IN, Charles Jacob Stocking of Quincy, MA, Zachary David Stocking of Quincy, MA, Patrick Aaron Shea (Rebecca Madeline Shea) of Griswold, CT, Dudley Sepeck of Warren, RI. His sharp intellect, mischievous smile, gentlemanly manner, kind heart and fun loving nature will be missed by all of his family members and countless life long friends.
