Daniel William Baker

July 6, 1948 — June 1, 2021

Daniel William Baker, 72, of Indianapolis, formerly of Trumbull, CT, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, surrounded by family. His death followed a 2-1/2 year battle with leukemia.

Born on July 6, 1948, in Adams, Massachusetts, to the late Donald and Lucille Baker, Dan was a graduate of Adams Memorial High School and North Adams State College. Dan spent his younger years in the Berkshires, where he met, married, and started a family with his beloved wife of 48 years, Nancy. His 45-year career in Health Care Financial Administration began at Berkshire Medical Center, continued with Hospital Corporation of America in the Greater Boston area, and concluded upon his retirement from Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut.

Dan was an avid reader, chef, grill master, fisherman, scotch drinker, cashew eater, and card player (he particularly enjoyed handing devastating losses to his friends and family over a game of Cribbage or Shanghai Rummy). Above all, Dan was a devoted father, husband, and grandfather who loved nothing more than spending time with his family. In his younger years, camping in the “signature” green Volkswagen camper bus provided many opportunities for adventures and trips with family & friends. Dan was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Trumbull for many years, serving on the Vestry and in various other roles.

Dan is survived by his wife Nancy Baker (Garity); daughter Katie Baker (Brent) of Indianapolis; son Jeffrey Baker (Irene) of Guilford, CT; grandchildren Ella and Lucy of Indianapolis and Archibald, Constance, and Alfred of Guilford; and his sister Marilyn Brouillett of Beverly, MA.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Dan’s life will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2021, 11:00 am, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1734 Huntington Turnpike, Trumbull, Connecticut, with the interment of his remains to follow in the Memorial Garden.

Dan loved fewer things more in life than preparing and sharing a meal with family and friends featuring one of his “personalized” recipes, so in lieu of flowers, a memorial gift in Dan’s name may be made to Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana (gleaners.org) or your local food bank.

Dan’s family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. David Lauck and Dr. Sumeet Bhatia’s
Oncology Team in Indianapolis, as well as all the staff at Community North’s Cancer Center,
Hospital, and Home Hospice, for guiding us through this long journey with such care and
Compassion.
