Daniel Sherman Sandberg, 65, of Indianapolis, passed away on October 7, 2023 after a long battle with cancer and other ailments.
Dan was born on July 8, 1958 in Indianapolis. He was the fourth of five children to Agnes and Orrin Sandberg.
After graduating from Lawrence Central High School in 1976, Dan attended Ivy Tech Community College and applied his talent for fixing things to a more than 40-year career as an auto mechanic. Dan worked at several car dealerships around the city, and in his spare time, you would find him tinkering with friends’ and family members’ cars in his garage. He could always be counted on to help with anything that needed “fixing.”
Dan married Carol Fulner in 1990 in Indianapolis. The couple renewed their vows on their 31st wedding anniversary at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Indianapolis in 2021.
In 2020, Dan retired and spent his time with family and pets, including his dogs, cats, and fish. An animal lover, he was known to adopt strays in the neighborhood — including, for a brief time, a small opossum that he affectionately named Garage Cat.
Dan spent the last year of his life fighting significant medical complications associated with cancer. He died at home after spending several months in the hospital.
Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Agnes and Orrin; his older brother, J. Scott Sandberg; and his younger brother, Michael Sandberg. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; only son Daniel Ryan Sandberg; daughter-in-law Emily Brelage Sandberg; and two sisters, Julia Sandberg and Catherine (William) Sibley.
A funeral liturgy will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Friday, October 13th at 12:00 p.m. A visitation will be held prior to Mass and will begin at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Dan’s name to IndyHumane.
