Dakshaben N. Amin

December 4, 1935 — May 1, 2021

Dakshaben N. Amin passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at the age of 85 surrounded by her family. She had been diagnosed with an aggressive metastatic cancer just weeks prior, for which she could not be treated. Although we all will miss her dearly, it is considered a blessing for her to be free from further pain and suffering.

Dakshaben was born in Baroda, India and after losing her mother at an early age, she grew up in Vaso, India with extended family and married her late husband, Natverbhai N. Amin in 1956. She had her first 2 children – Jyotin and Mayuri – in India and came to the USA in the early 1960’s to join her husband who just completed graduate school and began work in Philadelphia.

Dakshaben stands out as a devoted wife and mother as well as a pioneering Indian woman; among the first Indians to migrate (and eventually naturalize) to the USA. When she arrived in Philadelphia, she did not speak a word of English but stories of how she explored the city and endeared herself to locals who were kind and helpful stand out to our family. She helped establish countless Indian families who would come to the USA, teaching many how to get around, how to be an Indian-American, and many other skills such as how to find ingredients and prepare Indian food in a society which knew little of Indians at the time.

Dakshaben would go on to have 2 more children (Nisha and Tushar), and created several homes for extended family and friends after Philadelphia: Perth Amboy, NJ; a long-time home in West Windsor, NJ; Mahopac, NY; Kansas City, MO; Liberty Twp, OH; Newtown, CT; and finally, Indianapolis, IN for the last 9 months of her life.

She was a strong and kind, but humble and family-oriented woman, Dakshaben leaves behind a legacy of Indian-American culture and family. She is predeceased by her husband (Natverbhai) and survived by the 4 loving children she raised (Jyotin, Mayuri, Nisha and Tushar), 8 grandchildren (Nirali, Shreya, Monica, Nikhil, Spencer, Neva, Naiya and Dhilan) and 3 great grandchildren (Mia, Thea and Kai).

May her Soul rest in peace.
