Cynthia Jean Johns, of Indianapolis, passed away on October 24th in her home in the presence of her family. She was born on July 17th 1961 to Herbert and Virginia Johns. She lived for 61 years.
Cynthia, known to her family and friends as Cindi, grew up in Martinsville, IN. She attended Purdue University and received a bachelor’s degree in social work. Cindi dedicated her adult life to the service of Indiana’s most vulnerable people including foster children and adults and children with intellectual disabilities. During the day, Cindi worked at Seeds of Life and helped connect foster children to important resources as well as trained prospective foster parents how to care for children in need of service. It is hard to describe where Cindi’s “job” ended and where her personal life began as she shared her home with more than a dozen people who needed her help, some for decades, and some for only weeks. The difficulty with describing Cindi’s career extends to describing her family. The confines of a nuclear or even blended family are too narrow to capture the number of people that she considered family. Blood relation was not important to earn Cindi’s love, and in fact was one of the best things about her. Over the years the number of people that knew her as their mother and primary caregiver was tremendous.
Cindi loved crime and suspense novels, as well as television programming. She enjoyed the beach, but it is impossible overstate how her commitment to other’s absorbed her free time.
Cindi was preceded in death by her mother Virginia, father Herbert, her brothers William and Charles, and by Jackie, Mike, and Shalena. She is survived by many family members including but not limited to Nancy, Susie, Jovon, Philip, Charles, Aliea, Alex, Jade, Marquita, Troi, Skyler, Serina, Mina, and Elliana.
