Claire Barber Jackoway, (62), passed away on Thursday, May 27th in Indianapolis, IN. She was diagnosed with leukemia in 2017 and had a bone marrow transplant in 2018, leading to lung disease.
Claire was born on January 11th, 1959 in St Louis, Missouri to William and Anna Barber. She graduated from University of Missouri in 1981 with a horticulture degree and from Mount Mary College in 1994 with a degree in occupational therapy. She married David Jackoway on June 12th, 1988 and had her only child, Scott, on November 20th, 1993. Claire was an artist and a healer. She worked as an occupational therapist as well as a practicing reiki and craniosacral therapist. She was also a lifelong artist who made jewelry, clothing, and paintings professionally.
Claire had a deep appreciation for music, performance, and visual art. She loved nature and drew inspiration from the earth. She loved to walk and participated in several Indianapolis Mini Marathons with her walking group, the Sole Sisters. She was a spiritual person, who was at times a member of both the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis and the Unity Church. Claire will always be remembered by friends and family as being full of joy, laughter, and light. She made friends easily and had an infectious love of life. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband David Jackoway; her son Scott Jackoway; her sister Cathy Wiggins; her step-mother Eloise Barber; her step-siblings Eric, Lisa, and Jana; and her 3 cats. She is predeceased by her parents.
A memorial is scheduled for 2:00 pm on July 17th at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis. Jamie Hinson-Rieger will officiate. In lieu of flowers Claire requested donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
