Cheryl Lea (Murray) Schisler, 71, returned to her heavenly home on March 4, 2020 after a long, valent battle with lung and heart disease. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God helped her through this struggle, and ultimately gave her peace.
Cherie was born to the late Herb and Gladys Murray in New Castle, Indiana on April 4, 1948. She was raised in a Christian home and was a lifelong member of the Nazarene church, attending New Castle First Church, Indianapolis First Church, and Victorious Life Church of the Nazarene. She was a reflection of her parent’s firm belief in God. She was involved with her church by teaching children and adult Sunday School classes, being a board member, and also the church Treasurer. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1966 and went on to attend Olivet Nazarene College, and then IUPUI and University of Indianapolis later in life. She had a rewarding employment career that included being a Kindergarten teacher’s aide and ended with her being a bank teller for Chase Bank.
Cherie was blessed with a large and loving family. She was also a dear friend to many and had a special bond with her friends in “The Stitch Club”. She married Jerry Schisler on October 4, 1975 in Indianapolis. Cherie raised three children with patience, discipline, and humility. She taught them to read, write, and solve problems, and often took them to the park so that they could run off all their energy. From the very beginning, she dedicated her children to God and encouraged them to have their own relationship with Him and to pass this heritage onto their children.
Cherie was an educator at heart. She was well known for her vibrant bible story telling, especially when it came to telling stories to children. She was kind, and sometimes soft-spoken, and always had time to answer a question or solve a problem, no matter how small. Even in the nursing home, her room was known as a safe haven where the staff could come and take comfort in knowing that Cherie would be there to listen to their problems and give words of advice. She had the power to make you try some kind of food, no matter how many times you told her no. Her famous words were “Here, try this.” She is dearly missed by her loved ones, who celebrate the fact that she is finally home with her Heavenly Father.
Cherie is survived by her son, Jeremy Schisler; her twin daughters, Jaime (Bob) Axum and Michele (Russ) Jenkins; and her grandkids: Malachi, Ross, and Emma Axum; Rachael and Kris Elliott; and Jacob, James, Ulysses, and Olive Jenkins; and her sisters, Susan (Kirby) Popplewell, Judy (Mike) Miller, Valerie Murray, and Candi (Bill) Burdine. Also surviving are her nieces and nephews, Charlie (Shannon) Hollandbeck, Stephanie (Gage) Waltz, Michael (Amy) Foulke, Jacob (Karissa) Foulke, Trey Burdine, and Carsyn Burdine; her aunts and uncle, Mildred LaSota, Ron and Nancy Murray; her cousins, Vicky Shipley, Steve (Terri) Murray, Rhonda (Mike) Brown, Keith (Joy) Murray, and Scott Murray; and many great-nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her former husband, Jerry Schisler; her parents, Herb and Gladys Murray; her brother-in-law, Bill Foulke; her grandparents, Philip and Mainie Greer, and Charles and Ruth Murray; her cousin Annetta Santana; and her best friend, Ann Moberly.
