Charles “Charlie” L. Miller III, 83, of New Palestine, Indiana passed away Sunday, July 7, 2024.
Charlie was born November 22, 1940, to the late Charles L. Miller Jr. and Glenna (Davenport) Miller in Indianapolis.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Lelia Miller; children, Tamera (Richard) Schilling, Charles (Angie) Miller IV, Brian (Mandy) Miller; sister, Lucinda “Cindy” Robson; six grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Judith Miller.
Memorial visitation is Saturday, July 27, 2024, 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at Nativity Catholic Church.
Mass will begin at noon.
Burial to follow at New Palestine Cemetery.

LAST ASSIGNMENT: Charles L. “Charlie” Miller III was appointed to the Indianapolis Fire Department on 01/01/1968. He first served in the United States Marine Corps before becoming a firefighter. Charlie spent his first day on IFD assigned to Truck 13 C shift. He was regularly assigned to Engine 13 B shift on 9/18/1969. Charlie was promoted to Chauffeur on 01/01/1973 and began driving Engine 13 B shift daily. He was then promoted to Lieutenant on 01/01/1975 to become the officer on Snorkel 13 B shift. Charlie transferred to Engine 05 B shift on 1/12/1977, before being promoted to Captain on 01/24/1986. He went to Engine 21 C shift on 5/4/1987.This apparatus was in service while the new station 13 was being built. Charlie left Rescue 13 A shift on 6/13/1990 to become the Captain on Engine 33 C shift. He transferred back to the 13’s on 7/23/1991 to join the crew of Truck 13 C shift. Charlie was promoted to Battalion Chief on 3/30/1992 as the Suppression Program Manager. Next, he was promoted to Battalion Chief on 5/9/1992. Charlie made his final transfer back to the 13’s to become Battalion 13 C shift on 1/28/1996, where he stayed until retiring on 3/1/2005. He received an Applied Fire Science degree in May 1992 and attended many National Fire Academy classes located in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Charlie also was an adjunct instructor for Ivy Tech College both in Lafayette and Bloomington, Indiana campuses.
