Charles L. Johnson Sr. was born April 24, 1952 in Indianapolis, Indiana to James L. Johnson Sr., and Jenetta Johnson. He celebrated his transition on Thursday, December 31, 2020. Charles was preceded in death by his father James L. Johnson Sr., and his only brother James L. Johnson Jr.
Charles accepted Christ at an early age and united with St. John Missionary Baptist Church where he was active in Sunday School and the church choir. He recently became a member of Unity in Christ Family Worship Center under the pastorate of Rodney Cork in 2016.
He was a proud graduate of Arlington High School in 1970. Charles was lovingly known by his friends as “Charlie” or “Charlie Johnson”. Charles married the love of his life, Barbara J. Perry on July 5, 1975. This great love produced three beautiful children, Charles L. Johnson Jr., Jermaine Henry L. Johnson and Tanisha J. Johnson/Adams.
Charles had an infectious smile and laugh. His very first job, at the age of 16, was at Hillcrest Country Club and he absolutely loved this job and everyone liked him there. He loved working in the Indianapolis Public School system. It was about more than cleaning up the schools, all the students looked up to Charles as a friend and mentor. Charles was well respected and liked by his peers. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, eating (his beans), watching sports, his occasional trips to Cincinnati and all of his grandchildren.
Charles leaves to cherish: his loving wife, Barbara J. Johnson; two sons, Charles L. Johnson Jr., Jermaine Henry L. Johnson (Nicole); his one and only daughter, Tanisha J. Adams (Matthew); his caring mother, Jenetta Johnson; three sisters, Betty Harrison, Diane Taylor and Roxanne Yates. His amazing grandchildren: Talicia, Charli, Jayla, Jermaine Jr., Cheyann, Donte, Kennedy, Josiah, Davin, Mariyah, Jersi, Skylar, Matteah & Matthew Jr.; sister in laws, bother in law, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
