Charles Lee “Charlie” Flanagan was born March 4, 1941. He passed away on April 3, 2025, at the age of 84 following a hard-fought battle with a short illness. Born in 1941 to Tracy and Rhoda Flanagan, Charlie graduated from Lawrence Central High School. He spent 4 years in the Navy aboard the USS Wasp where he was a pipefitter, a skill he turned into a 40+ year career with companies like Hession, Rome, and Kirkhoff.
Dad, Papaw, Uncle Charles, Charlie. So many names for the same great man. Charlie loved all kinds of auto racing…from F1, Indy Car, and NASCAR to sprint cars and demolition derbies. He also loved the Pacers and the Colts and put together a mean NCAA bracket every March. His favorite sporting events, though, were any that his children or grandchildren participated in.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years and 364 days, Cindy (their 56th anniversary would have been April 4); daughter Amy Brewster (Andy); daughter Michelle Roberts (Jason); grandsons Andrue Dakota “Koty” Shackelford (Kara) and Wyatt Roberts; granddaughter Kylee Brewster; and great granddaughter Charlee Shackelford. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews who adored him dearly. Charlie is preceded in death by his parents Rhoda and Tracy; his sisters Lucille (Byerly) and Patty (Friddle); and his brother Glen.
There will be a graveside service at Old Oaklandon Cemetery on Friday, April 11, at 1:30pm. A Memorial Gathering will be held afterwards at the New Pal Lions Club from 3:00pm-6:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Red Cross or the American Cancer Society. Or, just take your loved ones out for an ice cream cone in honor of Dad…he would have loved that!
