Betty Louise Smith was called home by the Lord at the age of 96. She found eternal rest on Saturday, May 18th, 2024, in Indianapolis, IN. Her beloved Henry Smith was by her side when she took her last breath.
She was born Betty Louise Mitchell on June 30th, 1927, in Monroe County, IN to proud parents Hassell and Lillie Mitchell. Betty was one of eleven children in her family.
Betty was a devout Christian and loved the Lord with all her heart, mind, soul, and strength. Her life’s testimony is best characterized by Romans 14:8 - “For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's.”
Betty lived a full and complete life, having known both great love and great loss. Her first marriage was to Albert Curbeaux, with whom she had three children: Jimmy Lee, Linda Lou, and Roberta June Curbeaux. On June 17th, 1969, Betty married her greatest love, Henry L. Smith. Together, they would foster over fifty children over the span two decades, positively contributing to the lives of those who needed a loving environment to develop into healthy adults.
Betty’s primary roles in life were wife, mother, grandmother, caregiver, and mentor. She was uniquely gifted and uniquely placed to serve the Lord and to serve others. She enjoyed crafts, tracking current events, politics, and worshipping the Lord. She was adept in the culinary arts, where she mastered the combination of the chicken and the noodle to bring her family boundless joy! She was an avid Republican and had a passion for Christ and His great commission. She was not ashamed to share the gospel message with everyone she encountered, expressing what she believed and why she believed it. Her testimony for the Lord was strong, right until the very end. She worked hard for the Lord throughout her entire life.
Along with her beloved Henry, Betty was a small business owner, owning and operating small convenience stores in the Southeastern United States. She was a hospitality manager, actively running and managing hotel chains in Florida. She was intimately involved in the lives of her grandchildren, especially when they were young, playing a vital role in helping her daughters Linda and Robbi care for their children, assisting them to provide a moral, nourishing, supportive and stimulating environment during her grandkids’ formative years.
Betty was survived by her beloved Henry L. Smith, her daughters Linda Lou Kennedy, and Roberta June LaMonte. She had five grandchildren, Gary McCoy, Troy LaMonte, John Kennedy, Lauren Lasley, and Kristen Paredes. Betty had five great-grandchildren as well. Her brother, Michael Mitchell, is her only surviving sibling.
Betty was predeceased by her only son, Jimmy Lee Curbeaux, who was born on 11-28-47 and passed away on 01-16-67. Her siblings were Pearl, Janette, Marvin, Robert, Donald, John, Katherine, Irene, and Marie Mitchell.
