Bengt (“Ben”) Harry Mattson, 91, of Fishers, IN passed away peacefully December 17, 2024, surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife Margaret (“Marge”); their children, Carrie (Randy) Bennett of Fishers, IN, Brian Mattson of Bridgman, MI, and Jeff Mattson of Chicago, IL; grandchildren Haley (Kevin) Horal, Brad Bennett, Greg (Cora) Bennett, Mark Mattson, and Nicole Mattson; and five great-grandchildren. 

Ben was born in Kiruna, Sweden, to Oskar and Emma (Kuoppa) Kauppi; and had one brother Bo (Joyce) Mattson of Morton, Illinois. His father, mother, and brother preceded him in death.

Ben immigrated to the United States from Sweden when he was 14 years old and lived in Ashland, Wisconsin. He served two years in the US Army, stationed primarily in Germany. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Engineering and later received a Master’s Degree in Engineering Administration from Bradley University. He spent over 30 years working as a structural engineer for Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria, Illinois, while residing in Morton, Illinois. Ben was a lifetime member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. 

He and Margaret Johanek of Peshtigo, Wisconsin were married for 62 years. Ben and Marge moved from Morton to Fishers, Indiana in 2007. Ben enjoyed traveling with his wife, he snow skied into his 70’s, and he regularly golfed with friends. He was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and the University of Wisconsin Badgers. He loved his family and cherished the time he spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren to ski.

A private ceremony will be held for immediate family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ben’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association (www.heart.org) or any charity of the contributor’s choice.
