Barry Augustus Mitchell

Barry Augustus Mitchell, 76, of Indianapolis, Indiana died peacefully on February 2, 2023. Mr. Mitchell was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 24, 1946 to the late George Mitchell and Florence Mitchell. He graduated from Germantown High School where he was the senior class president and quarterback of the football team. He was a graduate of Lasalle University and Indiana University where he obtained his Master’s Degree in Education. He worked at General Motors for many years before he left to pursue a career in teaching. He taught Social Studies at Eastwood Middle School for more than 17 years before his retirement in 2013. Barry was an avid reader and sports fan. He was a loyal New York Yankees fan. He enjoyed watching baseball, football and basketball games with family and friends. He was a talented pianist and loved listening to classical music and Motown. He often participated in bible study groups and sang in the choir at St Luke’s UMC Church. His warmth, smile and humor will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He is preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Margaret M. Mitchell. Survivors include daughters Joy Friedman of Maplewood, New Jersey and Holly Anne Mitchell of Indianapolis, Indiana, granddaughter Lydia Friedman and grandson Marcus Friedman. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 9 at Indiana Funeral Care at 12 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor.
