Arno Dykstra began the new year in heaven reunited with his wife Helen. He was 89 years old when he passed away in the early morning hours of January 1.
Arno was born on April 1, 1930 in Byron Center, Michigan as the youngest of four brothers born to Edward and Minnie (Folkerstma) Dykstra – his brothers being Marvin, Gerald (both deceased), and Fred. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and was stationed aboard the aircraft carriers Leyte and Midway while serving tours in the Mediterranean. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service until retirement; followed by a career as office manager at Young’s Asphalt Paving. He was married to Helen Joyce (Voorhees) for 65 years, and together they shared a life of love and faith that was a great blessing to others. He is survived by his children – Mike (Patricia – deceased), Gregg (Donell), Christine (Reed), Jillinda (David), by nine grandchildren, and by eleven great grandchildren.
Dad’s greatest impact in life was his quiet, humble, and steady character, and the absolute and unconditional love for others he shared with Helen. Their relationship inspired and impacted those who knew them – in our immediate and extended family, in church, in life.
We will miss him incredibly every day…at each family gathering…and whenever we need a comforting smile and warm embrace. Our greatest hope and consolation is that we will be reunited with both Mom and Dad forever in that place of never-ending family reunion and rejoicing with Christ our Savior.
Visitation will be held at Hope Church at 2500 East 98th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana on Saturday, January 11 at 10:00 am with a brief service at 11:30 am.
