Arlene Artie Thomas

Arlene Artie Thomas, affectionately known as "Auntie," passed away on August 11, 2024, at the age of 96 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on March 6, 1928, in Jamestown, Kentucky, Arlene was a beacon of love and care throughout her life.

Arlene embarked on a fulfilling career as a surgical nurse, serving at various hospitals and bringing comfort and healing to countless individuals. She also worked for Ann and Fred Meyer and the Eli Lilly Family as their children’s caretaker. Her commitment to nurturing others extended beyond her professional life; she also obtained her cosmetology license through Madam C.J. Walker, blending her passions for health and beauty. 

Throughout her life, Arlene was deeply rooted in her faith. She was baptized at Greens Chapel Baptist Church in her hometown and was a devoted member of New Garfield Baptist Church in Indianapolis. Her faith was a cornerstone that guided her through life's challenges and joys.

Arlene's home was always filled with the aromas of delicious meals, a testament to her love for cooking. She was an enthusiastic fan of the Indianapolis Colts and found great joy in watching old western movies. Her laughter and presence were a source of joy at family gatherings, where she was revered as a motherly figure to her nieces and nephews.

Arlene is survived by a loving circle of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and friends who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Elizabeth (Lizzie Green) Clayton; her son, Jefferey Penman (Jennifer Ford); her brothers, Eugene F., Orville M., and Orison M. Clayton; and her sisters, Flora B. Ervin, Data M. Jones, and Catherine C. Garr.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024, at Indiana Funeral Care in Indianapolis at 10:00 am. Indiana Funeral Care is overseeing the arrangements. Arlene's life, marked by her generous spirit and enduring faith, will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.
