On December 31st, 2019, Alrick Thedwall passed away at home surrounded by his family at the end of an 8-year battle with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer.
Rick was born in 1951 near Asbury Park NJ and loved the shore from an early age. He graduated from Marietta College in 1973, and began a long career in television broadcasting at WDAU in Scranton PA. He fell in love with Kate Craig while working at the station, and they have been married these last 42 years.
Rick went on to work at both KWQC in Davenport IA and WISH in Indianapolis IN, where he was known for his creativity. He was the creative force behind local stations broadcasting on multiple bandwidths, including LWS weather and the first ever NCAA Basketball Tournament simulcast. He orchestrated the first TV broadcast of the Mini Marathon, which became an Indianapolis tradition that continues today. Rick was a pioneer in local television retransmission consent agreements, which has become an industry standard. In 2008 he left WISH and started Tree Valley Broadcast Consulting to help local TV stations achieve fair compensation for their work. In the last phase of his career, Rick joined Tree Valley with ATV Consulting and enjoyed teaming with other re-transmission specialists to support local news and television journalism.
Rick was renowned for his ability to fix anything- from electronics to plumbing. He was generous with his time, spending countless hours repairing the Devon Country Club pool and St. Matthew Catholic School. He maintained his love for the beach throughout his life and relished a perfect sunset over the water. Rick is survived by his wife Kate, sons, Craig and Ryan, daughter Megan, and three wonderful grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church on Monday, January 6th from 4 to 7 pm. Funeral services will be held at St. Matt’s at 11 am on Tuesday, January 7th. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Miles for Myeloma charity at
