Alice Gray (Symons) Wieneke, 91 of Carmel, Indiana and formerly of Seymour, passed away March 4th, 2025 in Carmel. She was born in Stuttgart, Germany, March 19th, 1933 to Paul Judson Gray and Louise (Kaufmann) Gray Symons. Her father was in the U.S. Diplomatic Service and transferred to Uruguay until his accidental death in 1936. Alice and her mother moved to Carmel in 1938 in joining her stepfather Kenneth Symons.
Alice graduated in 1951 from Broad Ripple High School and went on to obtain a degree in English from Indiana University in 1955. She loved the sisterhood of her Delta Gamma sorority. At IU, she met the love of her life, Jack Wieneke of Seymour. They married August 29th, 1954 and moved to England for 2 years while Jack was stationed in the U.S. Air Force at RAF Molesworth. Alice and Jack then moved to Seymour to raise their growing family.
Surviving are her daughter, Kristin (Rodney) Rowe of Vonore, TN; three sons, Dr. Mark (Mike Hollowell) Wieneke of Indianapolis, Kurt (Theresa) Wieneke of Indianapolis, Paul (Felicita) Wieneke of Issaquah, WA and sister Sandra (Dr. Robert) Fuller of Franklin, TN. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren; Rachel (Robert) Watts, Eric Rowe, Grayson Wieneke, Jacqueline Wieneke and Dampier D’Ugard. Plus, two great-grandchildren, Lilith and Margot Watts and two nieces Amy (Larry) Kendall and Jennifer (David) Russo.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Jack of 65 years, her parents and stepfather.
Alice was a homemaker while raising 4 children and volunteered for many organizations. She was in Tri Kappa philanthropic sorority for 27 years and President 1963, Boys and Girls Club and Garden Club in Seymour. She was involved in P.E.O., A.I.W. (Association of International Women), Delta Gamma and Columbia Club in Indianapolis and organized some of their style shows. She received her Real Estate Brokers License in 1968, at a time when few women obtained it.
Alice loved travel, music and the arts. Alice and Jack were charter members of Ambassadair travel club of Indianapolis. They traveled to Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean with the club. A memorable family trip with Ambassadair was to a mystery destination - the Canary Islands. Always creative, Alice won a nationwide advertising contest for Birds Eye vegetables and received a trip to Hawaii.
With her beautiful soprano voice, Alice enjoyed singing in the Immanuel Lutheran Church choir, especially Ave Maria solos at the Christmas program. She also sang in madrigal dinners in Seymour. She looked forward to Sunday music programs at Majestic Care in her final years.
Alice enjoyed being surrounded by her mother, Louise Symons (noted Indiana artist) oil paintings. A talented artist herself, Alice also painted several family favorites. She facilitated her mother’s Art Workshop by helping mentor students and being involved in the art shows at Southern Indiana Center for the Arts. Alice enjoyed taking summer art and music classes at Chautauqua Institution in New York.
Alice loved social events with her family and many friends over the years, and offered endless hospitality. With her trademark lipstick and earrings, Alice was always noticed as one class act. Everyone loved her. Alice Wieneke lived a life of devotion, dignity and kindness, and will be sorely missed.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at Indiana Funeral Care, 8151 N. Allisonville Rd. Indianapolis on March 22nd at 12:00 noon visitation and service at 1:00 pm. Burial will be held at a later date in Chestnut Ridge Cemetery, Dudleytown, Indiana.
