Aivers O. Freibergs

June 2, 1955 — December 17, 2024

Indianapolis

My brother Aivars Freibergs passed into the great Unknown Country early last night to join my brothers, Paul and Valdis "John", and the rest of our family already there.

Aivars was a 60's/70's hippie free spirit of our family who never lost that spirit, a self-taught, talented keyboardist/piano player specializing in ambient, new age, and space genres, a lover of music from classical to metal to folk to alternative. He lived and breathed and dreamed of music all his life. As well as into advanced electronics and radio (HAM/shortwave).

Though he had his inner demons, none the less, he did not let it overshadow his innocence, kindness, compassion, and empathy towards humans and animals alike. He was that type of person who would stop a car in the middle of a busy rush hour freeway to save the life of a distressed animal and did often sacrifice his own life to care for a person in need, not thinking twice about it! Though he had no opportunity to have a family of his own. He loved kids, being a kid at heart himself in many ways. Our nephews and nieces growing up would demand to have sleepovers just to visit Uncle Aivars, bringing along their whole toy chests, knowing it would be a blast. Times they fondly recall to this day. As did I, and my younger sister did as well.

My brother was a unique-souled individual. If you could pick out the best of the 1960's/70's counterculture, it's ideals and philosophy of individualism, peace, love, and free spirit. That was embedded in Aivars. That was inside of him and glowed with an intense halo in his aura. A dreamer, an adventurer, contemplating our purpose and reason for being here and now in this place. All the while sitting and contemplating under the stars. That was Aivars.

I know for a fact that my brother Aivars would not have wanted to mourn and carry on at his passing. He hated that. But instead celebrate his life.

And in that spirit. I leave you with a favorite song of his from his MOST favorite band. Strawbs: Benedictus.

For my brother Aivars is now among the stars. And if I know him and my other brother John, they are in ecstatic joy knowing and having all those philosophical questions in life we contemplate in this mortal life. Finally Answered!

Sail on, Aivars, sail on these seas of that great unknown country, and may you make many a blessed discovery on those most foreign of shores!
